CVPA President’s Message

Thank you to all of our members that have been following our pickleball play guidelines since they were implemented in mid-May. Please keep following our playing protocols and physical distancing as our province heads into a difficult COVID-19 stretch with more travelling permitted.

In order to keep our players from congregating while at the Rotary Highland courts, we ask that players only use the gate beside the tables for entry/exit to court #1. Please use the outer perimeter gates for entry/exit to courts 2 to 6. As well, please allow the previous court players to completely exit the court before you and your group enter the court to play. Another important thing that we should do for our safety is each person is asked to keep a record of the people that they have played with, just in case there is a COVID-19 case and we have to track down our contacts.

The following are some of the highlights from our CVPA Board Meeting on August 4:

1. The Town of Comox will be addressing the poor drainage near court 6 at the Rotary Highland courts this Fall.2.

2. The CVPA has authorized the installation of ten inside gates at the Rotary Highland courts. The gates will match the existing fencing and will be installed by the same company, Tower Fencing. The cost will be $3696.00 and will be paid by the Comox Valley Pickleball Association. We are hoping that the gates will be installed before the Labour Day weekend.

We are asking our members to make a donation toward the cost of the new gates. Please visit our website cvpickleball.ca (there is a donate button near the top of our home page) to donate or mail check to Colleen Crowder, Treasurer, 7792 Island Highway, Black Creek, V9J 1G5. Check is payable to (not abbreviated) Comox Valley Pickleball Association. There will be no receipt issued for income tax purposes.

3. The Suggested Play Time schedule has been adjusted for the remainder of August. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the Intermediated group will now play from 8AM to 10AM. The Casual/Novice group will now play from 10AM to noon.

4. In late July, the Village of Cumberland announced that they will be constructing two dedicated pickleball courts at the site of their present tennis courts.

5. Normally, the Comox Valley Pickleball Association conducts its AGM in September or October of every year. In accordance with provincial guidelines, we have decided to postpone our AGM until at least the Spring of 2021. In order to do this, our present Board members have to stay in place until the AGM is held. All of our Board members have agreed to do so. As we usually put out a call for new Board members in late Summer, we shall do so again this year. Anyone who wishes to let their name stand for a Board position in 2021, please contact Donna Turner, dowat@shaw.ca, our CVPA Secretary, or Rick Folk, rickfolk3@gmail.com, our CVPA President. Anyone interested in becoming a Board member will be invited to partake in our Board meetings on a “shadow” basis until our AGM is held.

6. The CVPA agreed to purchase two top quality squeegees for use at the Martin Park facility. These are in addition to the three that were purchase earlier this summer for use at the Rotary Highland courts.

7. Martin Park repairs have now been completed.

Keep playing safe and have fun.

Rick Folk,
President
